Information about the emerald

Description: emerald is a precious stone, a variety of beryl, from the same class as the aquamarine; it is a colorless mineral, having at its base the beryl silicate. Perfect emeralds are very rare, because the majority of them have small mineral impurities. A perfect emerald, without impurities it is considered more valuable than a diamond of the same weight, precisely because it is so rare.

Colors: the emerald can have a color from intense green to dark green. The color of green it is given by the chromium and vanadium contents.

Hardness: 7, 5-8 (from 10).

Note: the emerald can be confused with the green tourmaline, the green fluorite, the peridot, the green garnet or with the aventurine. There are different types of emeralds. The Siberian or Brazilian emerald is called verdelit, the African emerald is called green fluorite and the copper emerald is called diopsid.

The emerald is a variety of a specific green beryl-the green of emerald. Doctors used to recommend it for a greater image of the one who wears it. That is why it is said that Emperor Nero used a giant emerald in a shape of lens, as o monocle. The most beautiful emerald is found in the mines from Columbia.

For the first time, the emerald was mentioned in the Ancient Egypt in the 20th century, before Christ, being used as a precious stone. It was obtained from the Sikait and Sabara mines, and after 1000 years they exported emeralds to the Europeans, till the 16th century when the Spanish people conquered South America. In Asia it is discovered by Persians, Turkish people and by the Mongol dynasty in India. In 1935 it is fabricated the artificial diamond called”Igmerald”.

Utilization

The most frequent utilization is as a precious stone. The emerald has a stabile color; it only changes its color at the temperature of 700-800 Celsius grades. Because of the fissures from the crystal the color is uniformly distributed, that is why to stabilize the color of the crystal, the producers of jewelry are covering the crystal with a colorless, synthetic row of resin.

The emerald is frequently imitated by artificial emeralds, such as green tourmaline, or garnets varieties such as colored glass.
