Onyx

The black onyx is a variety of micro crystals of quartz, with a lot of colors and shapes, textures and inclusions: the heliotrope, the plasma, the agate, the onyx. These varieties have a fiber structure, perpendicular to the structure of the stone. In the past, the Egyptian people learned to change the color of the onyx; they have introduced the agate in a sugar solution and when the temperature rose, the sugar changed the color of the agate. The onyx can be sculptured; it is one of the few stones which can be sculptured.

It is a variety of colors from white to black, because it is a mineral like the pure agate, only that the last has a variety of all the colors. Its chemical formula is Si O2, and the trace is white. The pure onyx is white or black, other onyx is brown but there is an exception because it can be red or white. We can confuse the onyx with a yellow gem and which we can find it in the caves.

We can trove the onyx in Germany, in Brazil, in Mexico, in Pakistan, in Madagascar, in Uruguay and in the United States of America. In the Antic world, it was explored the onyx in North Africa, and used as rings and medallions. After North Africa, the next destination was the territory of the Swiss of our days. In the Antiquity, was used as a treatment for the hair, nails, skin and digestive problems, because the people thought that it has only positive energy. After some years, they created the horoscope and they gave this stone and the planet Saturn to the Chamois.

The black color of the onyx made it a semi-precious stone, appreciated as rings, medallions and generally used when somebody dies. This mineral is a very rare one, we can find it in the nature very rare, and so the technology had found an imitation, a volcanic rock which looks exactly like the onyx. We can make the difference between the two stones only with some special apparatus. So, when you want to by a jewel with a true onyx, take care, because the imitations are very common, even in the big shops.
